The Hollywood I love, the Pre-Code Hollywood, started in the late 1920s with introduction of sound into movies and ended on July 1, 1934 when the Hays Code censorship guidelines were seriously enforced.
This code of “decency” set us back culturally, and took away the right of public opinion by enabling local laws to restrict movie content.
Up until that time women producers and directors called the shots. Making movies about abortion, rape, prostitution, homosexuality, religion and financial ruin, with a rational, unsentimental perspective that our current, male driven, entertainment industry could never market.
In a Pre-code film a woman could have sex, money and power and not die of cancer at the end of the film.

Pre-Code Hollywood refers to the era in the American film industry between the introduction of sound in the late 1920s and the enforcement of the Hays Code censorship guidelines, which went into effect on July 1, 1934. Until that date, movie content was restricted more by local laws and public opinion than adherence to the United States Motion Picture Production Code of 1930, which generally was ignored by Hollywood filmmakers.
