I have always seen the film clip of WC Fields making a movie during the quake (I think it was the same quake) and that clip gave me the impression the tremors were not strong.

The Hati quake is clearly much worse. Horrible. Has anybody heard anything about the Dominican Republic? Are they helping? Did they have damage or injuries?

Comment on The White Ribbon Alliance and “Life Begins” by Axbish http://www.beforethehays.com/the-white-ribbon-alliance-and-life-begins/comment-page-1/#comment-62 Thu, 14 Jan 2010 05:04:47 +0000 http://www.beforethehays.com/?p=628#comment-62 Loretta drank something the nurses told her to drink. I’m not sure what it was…maybe something to stop lactation, what with the life prison term awaiting her. Actually that was not unlike what maternity wards were like until the 70s. Knock out the mother, throw out the fathers and doctors had complete control.

Comment on She Had to Say Yes, Well Professor Mary Daly didn’t. by Axbish http://www.beforethehays.com/she-had-to-say-yes-well-professor-mary-daly-didnt/comment-page-1/#comment-61 Sat, 09 Jan 2010 02:28:27 +0000 http://www.beforethehays.com/?p=621#comment-61 I couldn’t believe the plot of this movie! I couldn’t believe that Loretta Young’s character didn’t see all that much wrong with being pimped out by her fiance, Regis Thomey, and then being pimped out by the guy she was pimped out to, Lyle Talbot. And both these pimps were ready to toss her because they thought that she was easy. Of course she was a nice girl until they pimped her out. I could go on and on about this movie. Let me just say this: TODAY, yes, this very day, a guy in my office was on the phone with another guy and they were laughing about some reality show that measured the moisture in a bikini worn by women who were washing a car. (I don’t know what that means but this guy sure thought it was hot) He also told the guy on the other end that his fiance came in the room when he was watching and she said she didn’t mind, in fact, he said, she thought it was funny. Like fun she did.

Comment on Prosperity Blues and the Tinker Bell Economy by Axbish http://www.beforethehays.com/prosperity-blues/comment-page-1/#comment-60 Sat, 09 Jan 2010 02:05:46 +0000 http://www.beforethehays.com/?p=624#comment-60 Allan Sloan…unbelievable! When did make those comments?

The cartoon raises interesting questions about the “cult” of the New Deal…hatred of bankers and big money and Wall Street. It doesn’t show Roosevelt, but it certainly implies him and the optimism that he brought with him when he was elected. Let’s all go to the government and get saved. Some people fear a new cult…with a vengance. Not a problem today. Every word spoken, every decision made is turned on its head. Today, Krazy Kat wouldn’t be at the steps of the capitol for help, he’d be at a Tea Party protesting. He wouldn’t quite know what he was protesting, but he sure would be mad about something.

Great stuff. I believe Beverly Sills did not fall in love with her voice teacher who made her great. I like that.

Comment on Why You Should See These 51 Pre-Code Movies: My List of Blogs and Films for 2009 by Axbish http://www.beforethehays.com/why-you-should-see-these-51-pre-code-movies-my-list-of-blogs-and-films-for-2009/comment-page-1/#comment-37 Tue, 05 Jan 2010 05:19:09 +0000 http://www.beforethehays.com/?p=577#comment-37 I was glad to see “The Bitter Tea of General Yen” on the list. I have just gotten to it and I had to watch it several times…I still don’t think I grasp the whole story line but it is most intriguing. Frank Capra with Barbara Stanwyk and a Swede playing a Chinese general no less. Capra also uses many of his typical supporting cast members. It is so strange to see the father of Claudet Colbert in “It Happened One Night” cast as a drunken mercinary in “Bitter Tea”.

This is a great list! I have work to do!

What an amazing clip. Your comment that the children’s lines border on child endangerment is true, but it’s pretty funny to see what people used to get away with. Makes one wonder how our movies will look to folk in the future. Nice find, and nice link with the Honor Society story. But if students have to get a G.P.A of 3.4 and above, how are they gonna find time to go fishing and get to that watermelon field?

I know it’s kind of cheesy, but I found her speech so lovely and somehow had a genuine tone to it that really struck me. Happy 2010!
